Henry’s Island: Peacelover’s Paradise

Henry’s Island is a serene island only 10 minutes away from the village of Bakkhali in the Indian state of West Bengal. Bakkhali, itself a coastal tourist place, is located in the district of South 24 Parganas of West Bengal. The captivating Henry’s island is 140 kilometres away from the bustling city of Kolkata and is a quick getaway for the locals. The place is famous for its tranquillity, its virgin beach and the crabs that thrive on it attracting not just the locals, but also tourists from all over the world. One is sure to be mesmerized by the fresh air, the unexploited beach and the panoramic view.

The name, Henry’s Island, is given after the European who, back in the 19th century, surveyed this island which is covered with mangrove forests. This place is the home to the tourist lodge and pisciculture project set up by the Fisheries Department of West Bengal. Over here the breeding of prawns and fishes are conducted and you can witness almost fifty ponds dug up by the Fisheries Department of West Bengal for that purpose. Sunrises and sunsets should never be missed here, and you can stroll across the beach all day long.

Tourists get lost in the tranquillity and serenity of this place. The blue sea, white sand and awestruck views of the mangrove forest is a real treat for the eyes and soul. Since very few tourists visit this place, one feels that it is like a private island they are visiting. Henry’s island is very underrated and less crowd which makes the place more attractive. Do make it a point to visit the watchtower inside the Sundari Tourist Complex to get a magnificent panoramic view of the beach.
